Art and Community Service

Wednesday’s La Alianza meeting revolved around the topic of art and community service. Guest speaker Nell Pierce ’13 elaborated on her time in Guatemala City, Guatemala where she worked with Safe Passages, an education reinforcement program for underprivileged youth. The art program seeks to teach students art as a process of creating and a form of self-expression. Professor Pati Hernández also spoke about Telling My Story, a program she developed in women’s correctional facilities and rehabilitation centers in Vermont to give those who are not listened to in our society a platform for both dialogue and listening. Professor Hernández and Pierce are expanding this program to prisons in Chile next year. Students interested in starting similar programs in their community or elsewhere are encouraged to sign up for Professor Hernández’s course: Telling Stories for Social Change.
