Identity Complex

Wednesday’s Alianza meeting was held in conjunction with the Native Americans at Dartmouth student group. The topic of discussion was “Identity Complex: An exploration of how a single identity may be imposed on others.” Held at the Native American house, there was a great turnout from both student groups and, although a lengthy meeting (2 hours), a great discussion. The evening began with every student introducing him/herself with whatever qualities they felt best described them. The discussion later veered towards questions of identity within a minority group in general, as a member of a minority group at Dartmouth, as well as the idea of lateral oppression, that is, oppression from within one’s own group at Dartmouth.
